Navigating Fiction is a collection of navigable literary maps created as a part of "The Reality Clutch Project: Travels Inspired By Literature", an open non-commercial project focusing on spatial studies, literary cartography and digital publishing.
If you are a literary traveller, you can use these maps to travel (literally) to your favourite books – all you need is a GPS-enabled smartphone with a browser or Google Maps app installed. You can also use the "Download KML" option of Google Maps to get any desired map in a KML file compatible with navigation apps like Locus Map or Maps.me.
If you are a teacher or a literary scholar, you can use these maps to get new insights that might stay covert otherwise. (For instance, maps of Hans Christian Andersen's tales can tell a lot about his travels and social activity.)
If you are a thoughtful reader, you can use these maps to better understand your favourite stories and discover some exciting details their authors might have assumed obvious or preferred to leave behind the scenes.
We also have our special bookshelf on literary travel and a collection of web links to literary cartography and place-based storytelling projects around the globe.
Location data used in our maps is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 unless explicitly stated otherwise (check map description).
And yes, we're working on more maps. Stay tuned!
